Security
The admin password is still the randomly generated initial one. Set your own below.
HTTPS —
HTTPS encrypts the password and the picture and unlocks browser features: clipboard paste,
capturing Esc / Win / Alt+Tab in fullscreen, keeping the phone screen on. Install the PocketKVM certificate
once on each laptop / phone to get no warnings.
Always use HTTPS (redirect http:// addresses)
How to install the certificate
Windows: open the downloaded file → Install certificate → Local machine →
"Trusted Root Certification Authorities". Restart the browser.
macOS: open it in Keychain Access → System → double-click → Trust → "Always trust".
Android: Settings → Security → Encryption & credentials → Install a certificate → CA certificate.
iPhone / iPad: open the file in Safari → Settings → Profile downloaded → Install, then
General → About → Certificate trust settings → enable PocketKVM.
Linux / Firefox: Firefox settings → Certificates → Authorities → Import.
Check the fingerprint shown above before trusting it.

The spectrum is computed on the device and only a few numbers reach the browser. No sound is played here.
Restream · OBS Studio —
Sends the picture to OBS Studio, VLC and other players over RTSP: the grabber's own JPEG frames,
no re-encoding, about 1-2 % CPU per viewer. The browser stream is not affected.
Restream on
Start automatically with PocketKVM
✓ Picture compatible with OBS
Unrecognised MS2109 variant: check the 1080p picture in OBS.
If it arrives as two halves of columns, use 1280×720.
⚠ MS2109 in 1080p mode passes the raw picture with the wrong column layout to the restream.
For a correct picture in OBS 1280×720 is recommended. The browser view is not affected (WebGL fixes it).
Set 720p
Anyone with access to this network and the RTSP address can watch the picture.

How to add the picture to OBS Studio?
Switch Restream on (above).
In OBS Studio click + under Sources and choose Media Source; name it e.g. PocketKVM.
Untick Local File.
In Input paste the RTSP address from above (Copy button), e.g. rtsp://192.168.1.50:8554/kvm.
For the lowest delay set Network Buffering to 0 MB and tick Restart playback when source becomes active.
Click OK - the picture appears within a few seconds.
VLC: Media → Open Network Stream → the same address. Players without RTSP can use the MJPEG address
(http://…:8554/kvm.mjpg).
Original MS2109 grabbers ("USB Video"): in 1920×1080 modes the picture arrives split into two halves
of columns (the browser fixes this by itself, OBS does not). For OBS choose 1280×720 above - then the picture is whole.

PocketKVM works without Internet - only local access matters.

Field Mode · access point —
Unavailable with current Wi-Fi driver
This Wi-Fi adapter cannot run an access point, so there is no radio path to
PocketKVM when Ethernet is unplugged and no saved Wi-Fi is in range. Ways in:
Ethernet to a router (DHCP or static) - open the address shown above or http://pocketkvm.local/
Direct cable to a laptop with Ethernet mode DHCP + fallback : both sides pick a 169.254.x.x
address automatically after ~10-60 s; open http://pocketkvm.local/
Later: an AP-capable Wi-Fi adapter
Later: provisioning over the ESP32 (Bluetooth)
When there is no Ethernet and no saved Wi-Fi, PocketKVM starts its own access point.
Phones connected to it get the full KVM (after login) and have no access to the wired LAN.

Full system backup
One file with the whole PocketKVM system: settings, passwords, Wi-Fi, HTTPS certificate,
screenshots and recordings. Write it with balenaEtcher or Rufus to a USB stick (8 GB or more) and boot
any Dell Wyse 3040 from it - it works right away.

How to restore the backup (e.g. on a new Dell Wyse 3040)
Download the .img.gz file to your computer (Download button above).
Write it to a USB stick of 8 GB or more with balenaEtcher, Rufus or Raspberry Pi Imager ("Use custom").
Do not unpack the file - these programs read .img.gz directly. Everything on the stick is erased.
Plug the stick into the Dell and switch it on. Press F12 and pick the USB stick (or set USB first in the BIOS setup, F2).
The first start takes a little longer: the system grows its partition to the full size of the stick (once).
Connect the HDMI grabber, the Wi-Fi adapter and the keyboard/mouse cable. Address, login, password and Wi-Fi
are the same as when the backup was made.
Included: the whole system with PocketKVM, settings, passwords, Wi-Fi, HTTPS certificate,
SSH keys, screenshots and recordings.
Not included (reinstalled automatically or downloadable again): ESP32 tools, VS Code server,
caches, ISO images.
The image (6.5 GB) also fits the internal eMMC of another Wyse 3040. Write it from a live
USB system (this erases the eMMC):
zcat pocketkvm-kopia_….img.gz | dd of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=4M status=progress
From the command line a backup is made with:
sudo /opt/pocketkvm/scripts/full-backup.sh
Takes about 10 minutes, the stream keeps working. The file contains passwords - keep it safe.
Do not run the old and the restored device in the same network at the same time (same address).
Settings backup
The backup holds settings only - no passwords. Network settings are never
restored from a file (so a backup cannot lock you out).
